April 1st

April first is back and with it the trend of making fools, too. However, this year I thought I won't fool anyone and I'll try to be safe myself. I was and am safe but I fooled someone. In my neighboring flat there is this kid who always irritates me with two questions "batti kaile aucha?" and "batti kaile jancha?" so I just thought why not fool him today? He asked me the same question just a couple of minutes before the outage and I replied him there will be no outage today. He was happy because he could watch the cartoon. His sister also asked me the same thing and I gave the same reply. Just then the power went off and he came by asking me why. I just smiled and said "April Fool". All he could do was smile because early in the morning he had tried to fool me. The deal was even and I don't like keeping anyone's debt, whatever it is.

It was just a small joke which did not harm anyone but sometimes people play serious jokes on others which could cause a serious problem. I have heard about such jokes more than once, most of them from my relatives. I wonder why people do that? Its good to joke but it has to have certain limits. Everything should have a limit. Anyways, no more philosophical stuffs, its April 1st so happy April fool's day. Ha!!ha!!

Monarchy Not Ended Yet!!

The words "Monarchy has not ended, yet" spoken by former King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (I like to call him by this very name, the one I knew him by until he was overthrown) created a big stir throughout the country.

Many leaders were shaken, some commented he should be legally charged and some dismissed it saying it was just his daydream. I like the latter. He is a normal citizen now and has the right to freedom of speech and expression. He can say what he likes without the fear of being charged. He has the right to speech and I think he just used it, there is absolutely no reason for the leaders to overreact.

I agree with what the former King said about the Monarchy not coming to an end. I, too, think it has not ended. It still rules our heart and if voted for, I wouldn't be surprised people choosing Monarchy over Democratic Republic. We were happier and safer then we are now. Our country would have been better to be ruled by one lion rather than 1oo mouse.

Wherever we turn, all we find is loss. Loss of life, electricity, faith, money everything. It was better then. The only mistake he did was to take the absolute power in his hands and it was the biggest mistake ever. It might have been right for some reason but we have the habit of living in freedom and we don't want anyone to take it away from us. But we are forgetting that in the name of freedom, we are getting out of control. People might call me cynical or pessimist but this is what I feel and I really feel we are getting OUT OF CONTROL.

And The Pillar Breaksdown

The death of the Legend of Nepali Politics, The Peace Maker Girija Prasad Koirala was a shock not only to Nepal but the whole world. He was a great politician with good insights, determination, conviction and great leadership skill. The single person with the power to change the entire nation.

His death was a real shock, not just because it was untimely but also because I heard about it in one FM station so I tuned in to Radio Kantipur for detail but it said he was in COMA and the situation was critical. I was real shocked then. How can a FM station get that news and Kantipur cannot. However, he was announced dead after an hour. His life is full of controversies but he death, too, could not remain an exception, if only for me. It really came as a real shock to me. I don't want to talk about the controversies that surrounds him. He was a great personality with an immense leadership power. The pillar of Nepali Politics, who initiated almost all the major revolutions. The Peace Maker who brought the then rebellions, Maoists into lights by talks. He had the power to convince people. With that one long finger of his, he could make anything happen. Sometimes, I wonder is he was a magician of some sort.

I don't want to write about his contributions because they are too long to fit in here and besides, we all know it better. I just wanted to write about the effect it made on me not on the country or political parties. We will have to wait and watch it, I m not a political expert to predict what happens next. I just wish all the political parties focus on fulfilling his dream and last wish of peace and making Constitution of Nepal.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE!!

Meeting deadline

There is not enough time left for making Constitution of Nepal. It has already been postponed several times before, I just hope this time we succeed drafting it. But the way our government works I am afraid they are going to pass the deadline this time as well. I just hope unlike other times, this time the government works on time.

Women's Day

March 8, its a women's day. Why just this single day? Why not the remaining 364 days as well. If today is the women's day, are the remaining days men's day? I think we celebrate one day as women's day because they are very special to us. Women are usually left behind from the very beginning of the human civilization. This concept, however, has been changing but is still prevalent. May be this day is celebrate in order to encourage them to come forward. Whatever be the reason, I still like the idea of celebrating the specially dedicated to me and all the women in the world. But don't just pretend to be celebrating or respecting women just this day. Women are the creator of the life and I am not being a Feminist. Respect women, love them and show them how you appreciate them and how special they are for you. She might be your mother, grandmother, sister, wife, teacher or even your girl/friend. Just tell her how much you love her and see their reaction. If your have not said them yet, tell them NOW I bet you will have the best moment of your life. Happy Women's Day!!

Challenges

Yet another murder of a media person. Its too much now. It needs to be stopped. Everyone is doing their jobs yet no one really does. I don't know what happens next or who is the target but I fear for my future in this field. Its no more secure job to do but if I think of it, its a best job with lots of challenges and I like challenges. WHAT DO I DO???

street children 2

About five thousand children work and live in the streets of urban centre of Nepal. The street children of Kathmandu have developed the tendency of drug in-take. About 51% of the street children sniff glue and more than 17% children take alcohol, according to the data provided by CWIN (Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Centre).

The data shows that among 5000, 400-500 live in the Kathmandu Valley. The 2001 data shows that about 25-90% of the street children use the substances of one type or the other. Among them 51% glue sniffers live in Kathmandu out of which 19% have started this habit two years ago, 34.4% stared a year ago and 27.9% started few months back.

The reasons behind using this 'debut' drug were low self-esteem, an inferiority feeling complex and having enough pocket money to buy this substance. The street children consist of the children who ran away from their house because of their stepmother and some under the influence of their peers.

This drug results in hallucination, problematic behavior, self-destruction and fighting among the friends. It also affects the brain and the Nervous System. Among the users, 63.9% have reported one or the other kind of illness as long-term effects.

Glue sniffing can be termed as a "group activity" as 95.1% children use glue with their friends, 77% in the peer influence and 60.7% sniff glue on a daily basis.

The drug use is 20.6% and the alcohol use is 17.4% among the children of 10-17 age groups, with 21.8% boys and 11.2% girls.

More street children are exposed to intravenous drug use. Among them, about 10% are believed to be exposed to HIV infection.

However, the organizations working on the issues of HIV and drug abuse do not give priority to the issue of drug use and HIV among street children.
(CWIN)

After I got this data, I was sad for them. I couldn't believe it. But I saw a boy sniffing glue, I was shocked. It was a real shock to me. What about you?
